Hello… my name is Robin Kersten. I was born 1973 in Germany and Early in life I caught a slight case of travel fever. The best antidote I could afford at the time was travelling through Australia by bicycle. At 19 yrs old, after the realization of similar trips, I reached the island of Gran Canary. Here in the mountains we enjoyed the life in a cave. We means Tum and I. Tum is my faithful travel dog who has been with me for 10 years. To earn a livelihood I worked on sailing ships where I met Jürgen und Beate the .owners of the yacht “Spirit of Assy”. We got along well enough where they invited me to join them for the trip across the Atlantic to the Caribbean, via the Bahamas and on to Fort Lauderdale. After 2 weeks at sea I recognized that this would be the ideal life for me and Tum. Living on a sailing boat of my own was my dream. I stayed in Fort Lauderdale, the boat building ‘mecca’, and found work building ships trying to get as much knowledge about boats as possible. Soon my dream became reality, I owned a 9.30 m boat called La Maga, and completely refitted it while working on other projects in the area. With La Maga (Spanish for “little sorceress”), we went on a journey to central America, the Caribbean, Bahamas, and the Turks and Caicos Islands, then crossed the Atlantic from St. Martin to Bermuda and to the Azores towards Portugal. Until the Azores, I was accompanied by my brother Sven. The remaining distance Tum and I sailed together alone. Oh! I forgot Zora a small shepherd dog with me three and a half years now. Three years ago Jürgen, Beate and I sailed with the ‘Assy3’ from Tierra del Fuego/ Patagonia, passing the Cape Horn, crossing the Drake passage to the Antarctic and back again. We experienced extreme weather conditions on the journey, we also took part in hiking, camping and exploring the southern mountains in the region. At the Azores for I came in contact and purchased ‘Simile’ a catamaran with a length of 16m. Now coming to the actual subject “Simile–Sailing.”
